You’ve heard the term - innovation. You know you need to be doing it, but you’re not entirely sure what it really is and how to go about it.

Think of it like this;

Your business was created to help people solve a problem. You might not have expressed it that way but it’s true nonetheless. You saw a way you could help them achieve their goal, and you provided the means to do so, with a benefit they were willing to pay for.

Innovation is similar.

Innovation is about discovering a real problem people experience and solving it in an original way with technology or processes. It involves truly understanding the people you are trying to help, and uniquely connecting them with new or existing solutions.

To make it a business innovation, it also needs to grow the business; either by increasing revenue, decreasing expenditure, or protecting and consuming market share.

Most businesses struggle to innovate because they are trying to find ideas they can execute using their current business model and the resources they have at their disposable. They look closely at what they can do, not what they should do.

But innovation is not about execution - it’s about discovery.

Innovation happens when you stop trying to convince people to love what you do, and instead you do the thing that people love.

You need to discover what people really need and provide it better than anyone else. That might mean cheaper, faster, or more convenient, but above all, it must solve their problem completely. And you won’t learn what their problem is and how to solve it while you are inside your business.

Innovating inside your business can be difficult. You need to form a team with the right creative and empathic mindset, encourage them to put your customer first, and empower them to validate new ideas without undue fear of failure. A culture of innovation is a tall order for a lot of businesses and many struggle to achieve it.
